Chinese New Year

15th Feb 2017

Primary 3 and 4 have had a wonderful half term researching how another culture celebrates the beginning of a New Year. Their topic involved making Chinese lanterns, calendars, rooster and dragon crafts; researching their animal of the zodiac and finding out lots of interesting facts about China.

The boys and girls thoroughly enjoyed a 'Taste of China Day' where they got to sample egg fried rice, noodles and spring rolls with sweet chilli and sweet and sour sauces.

The best was kept to last with a special visit from Miranda and Sharon from Wing's Chinese Takeaway in Fivemiletown. The ladies recently celebrated Chinese New Year in Hong Kong (the year of the Rooster) so they had lots of stories to share with the children. This began with a question and answer session, the children were very eager to find out about the fifteen days of celebrations that took place in Hong Kong. Our visitors presented a PowerPoint and videos; distributed souvenirs: money wallets, prawn crackers and fortune cookies; and finally they gave a master class on how to use chopsticks. The children now know how to say hello, goodbye and thank-you in Cantonese. A huge thank-you to Miranda and Sharon for taking time out of their busy schedules to give us a first hand insight into life in China and the celebrations for Chinese New Year.
